Sydney Fish Markets Project: Huge Win for Plastic Waste Leakage in Construction and Environment.
a year ago, Seabin News
The new Sydney Fish Markets project is setting a groundbreaking precedent for sustainability in the construction industry in combatting plastic waste leakage both onsite and in the surrounding area. Recent data from 2024 reveals that only 0.4% of all plastic pollution captured in the water at the site originated from construction waste, but the catch (no pun intended) is an overwhelming 99.6% of the plastic waste captured using Seabin technology likely came from the surrounding local government area, entering the site through a stormwater culvert and possibly from nearby streets and stormwater drains.
This remarkable achievement results from a sustainability initiative seeing Seabin collaborate with Multiplex, Infrastructure NSW (INSW), and the Sydney Fish Markets to combat plastic pollution in Sydney harbour. By leveraging impact data to monitor and reduce environmental impact, the partnership actively protects the natural environment while promoting sustainable construction practices.
The minimal construction waste figure highlights the project’s stringent environmental standards and commitment to reducing its ecological footprint. It also underscores the importance of community-wide efforts in addressing plastic pollution, demonstrating how effective stormwater management and local collaboration can significantly mitigate environmental impact.
The Sydney Fish Markets project not only exemplifies innovative construction practices but also serves as a powerful example of how partnerships and data-driven approaches can lead to significant environmental benefits. This initiative is a testament to the collective responsibility we all share in protecting our planet.
Seabin started off in 2018 with a simple cleanup model, has transitioned over the years into a powerful environmental impact data services provider working with some of the worlds biggest businesses to work on upstream solutions for reductions and removal of plastic pollution in the natural environment.
